Keszthely is situated on the western side of the Lake Balaton, 187 km away from Budapest with 20.900 inhabitants. The city is a very important cultural, educational and economical center because it is the largest city by the lake. Keszthely has many different museums, suitable for all taste and age groups. The Balaton Congress Center and Theatre was established in 2002 for the purpose to bring more programs and events to the town. It became a cultural and conference center of the region.
Festetics Castle was started to be built in 1745 and finished 1880 where it grew in its neo-baroque look. Since 1974 the Helikon Castle Museum is independent which its library of 100.000 volumes which is the only untouched aristocratic collection in the country. Other sights in at Keszthely are the Balaton Museum, Bacchus Wine Museum, Keszthely Pantheon, Mikus Gallery, Pottery House, Balaton Theatre, Town Hall, Gothic Parish Church, Mural Detail, and the Marzipan Museum. The Holy Trinity Statue was erected in 1770. The Pedestrian Precinct, starts from Main Square offers many restaurants and shopping facilities. The building on Kossuth Street number 28. used to be the former Town Hall.
